01 — What Madaster Stands For
Madaster provides transparency regarding which materials and products are used in buildings, the quantities in which they are present, and the potential for reuse and recycling. To this end, digital building data and BIM models are converted into structured material information, forming the basis for material inventories, building resource passports, and further circularity assessments. As a result, buildings are viewed not only as real estate but increasingly also as future sources of raw materials.
02 — What Makes Collaboration Work
LIST Eco and Madaster share the goal of translating circularity from an abstract requirement into measurable and practical information. LIST Eco incorporates BIM models and project data into the assessment and uses the Madaster platform to systematically analyze material quantities, circularity, dismantling potential, and other resource metrics. This collaboration goes beyond the mere use of software. Insights from real-world projects are incorporated into the further development of methods and applications. This creates a solid foundation for assessing circularity as early as the planning phase and documenting it transparently via a building resource passport.
03 — How the Collaboration Works
Depending on the project, LIST Eco handles the BIM-based processing and evaluation of building and material data and, in collaboration with Madaster, uses this information to develop building resource passports and circularity assessments. In addition to material quantities and circularity, factors such as ease of dismantling, reuse potential, and residual value of raw materials can be taken into account.
Together, Madaster and LIST Eco are driving forward the residual value assessment of building materials in particular. The goal is to incorporate the future value of the materials embodied in a building more fully into decisions made by the real estate industry, banks, and the public sector, and to establish applicable valuation frameworks for this purpose.
04 — What Comes of It
The partnership ranges from the assessment of individual buildings to the question of how existing materials can actually be incorporated into new projects. Through initiatives such as Madaster Match, Madaster and LIST Eco are therefore supporting the development of concrete urban mining processes: identifying available building components and materials, assessing their potential, and matching supply and demand for reuse.
